Artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the most important technologies for digital transformation. In addition, it also offers specific solutions for the greatest ecological and societal challenges of our time. Whether the issue is the preservation of biodiversity, sustainable consumption or organic farming – AI can be applied in many areas. It is thus an opportunity driver in environmental protection and climate action. However, this new technology also poses risks to our society and in particular to consumers. AI systems can unjustifiably disadvantage people or discriminate against them.

The Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) is committed to an ecologically sound and socially just use of AI. We are also aware of the social and environmental effects of this technology, as the use of AI should also be people centred and resource efficient.
